Urgent Call to Action for Community Dispute Resolution Centers

This request is going out to Community Dispute Resolution Center (CDRC) staff, mediators, board, and community supporters. We are in the midst of what has so far been a very effective advocacy campaign to raise awareness about the CDRCs, build relationships with legislators, and push for $1 million in funding from the New York State Legislature.

As many of you know, the CDRCs have a strong working relationship with the Office of Court Administration (OCA) and have been funded through OCA since the CDRCs were established in 1981. Since the State funding crisis in 2011 when OCA funding to the CDRCs was reduced by 44%, the CDRCs have been forced to cut staff and programs and are no longer able to adequately respond to the needs for conflict resolution services that exist in all our communities.

The $1 million legislative add we are requesting for next year’s budget would be spread across the 21 CDRCs that serve all 62 counties in New York. It would be a strong first step toward restoring the CDRC network and making it possible for CDRCs to continue their important work.

As we have been meeting with legislators and testifying at yesterday’s budget hearing, we have had a great response! Next week is the final week to influence the Legislature on what they include in the budget.

We come to you now with a simple request:

Write your legislators and ask them to support the legislative add for the CDRCs. The letter is already prepared and only needs your personal touch. It should take just 10 minutes of your time.
