New York Center for Interpersonal Development
Our Mission: We Improve Lives
At NYCID, we believe in building community and nurturing personal growth. We improve lives through conflict management, social-emotional learning, and youth and workforce development.
We are experts in effective communication and through our core values of Collaboration, Accountability, Recognition, and Resilience, we works to help people and communities develop the essentials skills needed to move New
York City toward the goal of being a more compassionate, civil, and economically mobile place for all.
It’s been more than fifty years since we first opened our doors with The Rap Center on New Dorp Lane, a place for young people to gather, explore personal issues and forge healthy relationships with caring adults willing to provide support and guidance through very difficult times and today we are still helping young people realize their full potential.
In 1982, NYCID broadened our scope of services and opened the Community Dispute Resolution Center. With the training of volunteers in mediation and other methods of conflict management, we began providing professional dispute resolution services to the Staten Island community at large.
Over the years, NYCID has reaffirmed our commitment to supporting young people and peacefully resolving conflicts. The years have seen us grow into the noteworthy and unique service provider that we are today. Working not only with Staten Islanders but with residents throughout New York City, our menu of programs and services has expanded to include: school-based after school enrichment programs, a transfer high school, dropout prevention services, numerous innovative mediation and conflict management services and dynamic training and professional development workshops.
NYCID continues to value the cultivation of positive, respectful human relationships and the strengthening of communities as fundamental to achieving a civil and just society. It is towards this mission that NYCID, through our committed and talented staff, volunteers, partners, and supporters, dedicates itself each and every day.
New York Center for Interpersonal Development’s Accomplishments:
Every day we are in our community helping people resolve their conflict through-one on-one meditations, conflict management and communications training. Each year we mediate more than 700 cases and train more than 1,000 people in effective communication and conflict resolution. Every year over 5,200 “At-Promise” 4 to 24 year olds begin various programs with NYCID. Each of our kids gets a fresh start.
Thousands get the extra support in after school enrichment, some are being given a second chance at a high school diploma and a job. Dozens are introduced to a NYCID Credible Messenger who helps them stay focused instead of behind bars. This year we will serve 9,000 New Yorkers.
This is how we improve lives.
