Located at Snug Harbor Cultural Center on Staten Island’s North Shore, the Noble Maritime Collection’s centerpiece is John A. Noble’s unique houseboat art studio, restored and installed within the museum’s landmarked building, a former sailors’ dormitory from 1844.  The museum presents 11 permanent and changing exhibitions each year, as well as ongoing public programs including monthly Sea Shanty Sessions and mission-related lectures. The museum is open to the public Thursday through Sunday from 12 to 5 PM, and to ensure equitable access for all, offers a pay-as-you-wish admissions policy.  The museum also has a popular shop, from which visitor services associates base their work.

Responsibilities:

  • Works with the Visitor Services Coordinator, administrative staff, and volunteers facilitate all aspects of the museum’s public use.
  • Opens and closes the museum’s historic building for its public gallery hours, including opening galleries and interior window shutters, in a timely manner.
  • Greets every visitor to the museum and gives them a brief orientation and provides general assistance to visitors.
  • Updates visitor sign-in log and daily log of attendance.
  • Monitors collection during public hours to ensure exhibitions are in order and informs senior staff of any maintenance needs in galleries or public areas that need attention.
  • Light maintenance of public areas may be required to ensure a proper visitor experience, including spot cleaning and the changing of light bulbs.
  • Promotes and sells museum memberships and is knowledgeable of member benefits.
  • Stocks information rack with current marketing materials.
  • Assisting Visitor Services Coordinator with visitor and shop related projects.
  • Assists with special events as needed.
  • Supervising Visitor Services Volunteers (who do not handle sales and donations)
  • Collecting daily donations in full accordance with current procedures, completing visitor and register paperwork, batching the credit card machine, and balancing cash drawer, and closing out the register at the end of the shift if the only staff-person or if assigned.

Requirements:

  • Participants must be dependable and loyal.
  • Must have an amicable relationship with the public and willingness to assist museum staff.
  • Shows a willingness to gain knowledge of the museum, John A. Noble, Sailors’ Snug Harbor, maritime history, and printmaking, and convey the knowledge to visitors
  • Must have an understanding of museum security and overall maintenance of the facility.
  • Have good public speaking skills.
