What Will I Be Doing in this Program?
At the beginning of the program, you will take two courses. The first course will be taught by NYCID staff where you will learn about how to navigate your future career path. The other course will be a CUNY course where you receive college credit. Course is to be determined.
You will be paid for attending and completing assignments in BOTH of these classes.
After the courses are over (in December), you will then start an internship where you will work for the remainder of the program. This internship will be similar to SYEP, however, you will work less hours per week since you are also in school. More information can be found below.
Where will I be working?
Throughout the year, NYCID partners with different organizations and businesses to have jobs available for youth within our workforce programs. For the Work, Learn, Grow program. you will be asked to apply to the jobs we have developed.
You will be able to apply to up to 3 jobs for WLG You will review the job description which includes the name of the business, the summary of what that business does, the requirements and responsibilities for the job, and the location and hours of operation.
After reviewing the job, if you are interested, you will apply to that job. You will be asked to give your contact information, a short summary of why you want to work at that business, and you will also be asked to rank that job as your first, second, or third choice.
IMPORTANT: You will only be allowed to work in the internship if you completed your two courses mentioned above. If you fail your courses, you may not be allowed to work.
After you apply to 3 jobs and rank each of them, NYCID will try to place you at one of your 3 choices.
- If we are able to place you at your first choice, we will do so. If we cannot place you at your first choice, we will then try to place you at your second choice.
- If we cannot place you at your second choice, then we will try to place you at your third choice.
- If we cannot place you at any of your choices, we will do our best to place you at a job that is close to where you live and/or matches your career interests you listed on your application.
The reasons you may not be placed at your choices are:
- The position has already been filled with other applicant(s).
- You did not meet the requirements, which may include already having the skills necessary for the job, an age requirement, or some other requirement.
- You did not finish one or more of your orientation requirements.
- You did not submit all of your documents for the program such as selective service, working papers, or some other document.
Applications for jobs are NOT open at this time.
After you are placed at a worksite, we will let you and your worksite know. Note that some worksites may still require an interview before you start working there. Depending on your worksite, you may also need to go through a background check or some other clearance (for example some child care sites require a background check in order to work with children).
Before the program begins, you will either receive a set schedule or you will have first day instructions from your worksite.
*Note: You may be de-enrolled from the program if you do not show up to work in the first week.
How will I be paid this during this program?
There are only two methods of pay for WLG. Your pay is based on how many hours you work which is approved by your supervisor at your assigned worksite.
- The default option is a prepaid debit card called a Payroll card. You will need to pick up your Payroll card from your career ready coordinator. If we have your payroll card, we will contact you. It can be used in most places where cards are accepted, such as convenient stores and ATMs. It can also be used online. If you lose your card, it can take anywhere from 2-3 weeks to get a replacement.
- PREFERRED: Direct Deposit is the other payment option. If you have a bank account that accepts direct deposit, you can have your pay sent to your bank account on pay date. This is the preferred option because if you lose your own bank card, you can go back to your bank to get a new one or they can mail you a new card faster than option 1 above. However, you should not sign up for direct deposit with Cash App, Venmo, or other digital payment platforms. These are not considered traditional banks. Traditional banks have physical branches for in-person assistance, a larger network of ATMs for cash access, and often offer interest-bearing accounts. Additionally, they have an established reputation for security and reliability.
If you need to sign up for a bank account, you can click HERE to use Get Banked NYC which can help you find youth friendly banks.
If you are ready to sign up for direct deposit, you can click HERE for the direct deposit manual.
