What is moving in you?

How do you see the world? What is the lens you are looking through? What gifts or attributes do you have as a human being that are unique? Why are you, you? And how does any of this matter to you when you are thinking about what kind of career you might want to pursue? How does knowing yourself make you employable?

This website will help you begin to see that in order to be satisfied with a career you need to process who you are as a person. You need to know how your emotions move in your body and why you feel certain ways, you need to know how you deal with conflict, and you need to know how you come to solve problems.

This is the journey – the process of inventing yourself.

And it is one that doesn’t exactly have an end.

What is the difference between an expectation and reality?

Take a moment and think about a time when your expectations didn’t meet your reality.

  • What happened?
  • What was the outcome?
  • What would you do if you could get a “do-over?”

Understanding Your Emotions

Do you ever feel like you’re jumping through hoops? Or that your life is on one big loop?

As we move through life, we usually begin to see the patterns in our thoughts and feelings. These patterns almost always come from things we need, like safety and security or a sense of belonging. As we have more experiences we make more connections, and as we make those connections we see that life is a circle.

Each of you by now already knows that you have lots of emotions. True?

And can you identify how you are feeling most days? Can you describe how you are feeling?

Go to your journal, voice recorder or word document and describe:

Your goal is to begin to practice identifying how you are feeling or as we say “what is moving in you?” and then to spend some time either talking about those emotions or journaling about them.

Using the wheel, pick an emotion and write about it for a bit.

What Is Your Lens?

Once we better understand how our emotions move in our bodies and to make heads and tails out of what we are feeling, we can better understand the world around us.

Here’s a question for you. How do you see the world?

So do you see a younger woman or an older woman?

Or do you see both?

We see things a certain way for a number of different reasons.   We see the world through our paradigms!

As we come to understand our paradigms, we start to see that there are certain attributes we have as human beings that help us make sense of the world.  They are also what we use to make choices and take risks. These attributes are our Four Human Endowments: Self-Awareness, Imagination, Conscience, and Independent will.

So for every stimulus, there is a response, yes? While this is true, our responses are far too often reactions that do not give us the results we are looking for. In fact, we often regret how we have reacted or the actions that we took.

Journaling

Go to your journal, voice recorder or word document and consider a time in your life now where you reacted to a situation and then later wished you had done something differently.

Take 5 or 10 minutes to write about this event.

  • No judgments.
  • No trying to go back and fix things now.
  • Just write down what happened and what you would do next time.

Proactivity Or Reactivity

Now that you understand a bit more about how stimulus and response works and how in between the stimulus and the response is where you have the power to choose those responses, let’s take a little time to understand if those responses are reactive or proactive.

Here’s something we want you to do as much as you can as you go through this process.  Ask yourself difficult questions, and demand honest answers.  We have all had the experience of not being truthful with ourselves and then when we realize that we set the wrong expectations, or reality begins to come crashing down on us.

Journal Activity:

Go to your journal, voice recorder or word document and after taking the DISC survey and watching the video about our greatest fears, ask yourself a difficult question.

  • Do you agree with the survey?
  • How did the video about fears make you feel?
  • How can you face your fears?
  • What might you try?

Communicate Through Conflict

One of the most important essential skills we can all learn is how to communicate through conflict. When your emotions are high and your stress levels are putting an incredible amount of pressure on your body, knowing how you naturally deal with adversity will help you create the space to have responses instead of reactions in the heat of a tense moment.

Doing this before you do your assessment will allow you to have a before and after set of results.
