Week Two ~ Dig Deep and Discover

It is Week 2, our Good Humans and the purpose of this week is to begin to explore both who you are as a person and who you want to #become!

The expectations for the week surround you getting through a series of reflections, inventories, and surveys which are going to help make decisions about what Career Paths you will explore in the final three weeks.

So let’s dive right in ~ always remembering to acknowledge the past and connect ourselves to our world!

Land Acknowledgment

In New York, we are on the ancestral land of the Lenape people.

We say this to acknowledge that, no matter when or how we personally arrived on this land, we each have a relationship to the life and the pain that this ground has been witness to.

Let us take a moment to reflect on the responsibility of that relationship.

Let us be stewards of this land and make a connection to it that allows us to leave it better off than when we arrived.

Tool ~ Mindfulness Check-in

Remember to Journal!

Setting the Container –

In our sessions together – we will always “Set the Container” and that means we will make commitments to each other on how we will work together.

Click the Group Commitments below to read through what to expect in our sessions together.

-You are here ~ Be present ~ Be Kind ~ Treat others how you want to be treated

-Embrace “The Circle Process” – As shared the way we work at NYCID is using the Restorative Circle – We will never force you to speak so understand you can pass and we expect that you will participate as you become more familiar with the how we work together.

-Let perfection go and share your experiences – We must work together and learn from one another in order for our process to be fulfilling.

-Remember impact over intention – As shared we often have the best intentions and we do not always realize the impact our actions have on others. When you get a reaction you were not expecting say “ops” and if you are on the receiving end say “ouch.”

-Notice our own biases and judgments – We all have them. Let’s not ignore them!

-Realize our privilege – It exists and is based on different seen and unseen identities we hold – we deepen our connections to one another when we acknowledge as much.

-Practice self-care and community care – Take care of yourself – when done right – you will take care of others!

NYCIDY Elections Explained

This year we are challenging each NYCIDY to elect a Mayor who will be responsible for representing your district at the United NYCIDYS.

Your NYCIDY Mayor will report to several meetings with the Governor of the United NYCIDYS to retrieve resources that your sectors will need to complete your budgets.

NYCID-izens who want to run for office should put their name into the pool of candidates, and in week three, each candidate will share why they are running for office; in Week Three, you will vote on who will become the Mayor of your NYCIDY.

Sector Leaders

Additionally, in Week Three, as you make your way into your sectors, your team will nominate a Sector Leader who will be responsible for the following:

1. Work with the Mayor to retrieve resources.

2. Be part of the final presentation team.

3. Handle all administrative tasks for the Sector

Start With Why: Revisit Your Mission Statement

If you go to Tottenville High School on Staten Island and visit the NYCID office there – you will see a quote on the wall from a young person who graduated from The YABC (an alternative High School program) in 2012. At a training like the one you are in right now, Christopher S. said, “Yo – Your reason why should make you cry.” Truth!

Part of your journey with us this summer is to become who you want to be; to do that, you must consider “WHY” you are motivated to do anything in life. Realize that we are saying not “WHAT” motivates you. Or “HOW” you are motivated. We want you to think about WHY! WHY! WHY! You do the things you do!

This part of the training will take you a bit more time. You might not have it all done this week, which is okay. What’s important is that by the end of the training, you have nailed down your WHY and created a personal statement that will guide you toward becoming who you want to be!

Watch last year’s video – if needed!

Pro-Action Plan Step Week Two (1 of 5):

Locate your 2021 Mission Statement on your – NYCID_Proaction_Plan_THREE Revisit this statement and redevelop it if necessary!

Consider why you do the things you do in life to succeed. What’s your reason why? What could make you cry when you think about your life.

Then on the “My Story” Page in your Pro-Action Plan – use the prompts to write your mission statement.

Note: You will need to discuss what it was like to consider you WHY in our circles during our sessions together.

Feedback – Let’s Face it

Benefits of Receiving Feedback Well

Your relationships become richer.

You learn and get better at things.

Other people find it more enjoyable to work around you.

It is easier for you to work with others to solve problems.

By your example, you help others see the value in seeking feedback for themselves.

Appreciation

Coaching

Evaluation

You are giving thanks and encouraging yourself to keep doing what you are doing. For it to be effective, it needs to be specific, authentic, and in a form that you find satisfying.

Showing you a better way to do something to help you grow. Coaching can be related to improving your skills or fixing a perceived imbalance in a relationship. (Note: Grace uses the word coaching to mean the act of listening and asking questions to help a person discover the best way forward.)

Tells you where you stand compared to a standard or compared to others. Evaluation aligns expectations and clarifies consequences.

Relationship Triggers

Identity Triggers

We resist feedback if we think the person giving it has questionable motives or lacks credibility. Also, how the person delivers the feedback may cause us to resist. Instead of hearing what the person is saying, we focus on our issues with the person.

We resist feedback when we perceive an attack on who we think we are. Our brain’s survival functions cause us to move toward pleasurable things and away from painful ones. The brain gets confused when it faces short-term pain necessary for long-term gain or short-term pleasures that produce long-term pain.

Pro-Action Plan Step Week Two (2 of 5)

Let’s Face it!

In this step we want you to tell yourself how you intend to respond the next time you get feedback. Talk to yourself. Create a mantra, or come up with a word that will help you accept the feedback without reacting.

Do this on your “Thought Experiment” page.

Remember: you can choose any write your answers, or record an audio or video file to express your ideas.

Note: You will need to discuss your answers in our circles during our sessions together.

Remember to Connect

As you move through the material and return to the site each time and as you move through your group sessions, remember to always begin with your check-in.

Circle Up – How are MWe?

During our session together let’s circle up and how you intend to design the life that you love.

Round One: What’s one thing you love about life now?

Round Two: How are you going to design a life you love!

Be prepared to share your answer to the from above in the circle.

Harvest

Upon returning to the main circle – we will harvest (share) some of what was moving in the smaller conversations.

The Question in the main circle is always: What is moving in me?

What is Valuable?

So how do we decide what we will do with our lives?

You may often hear people say that you need to “follow your bliss” or that you have to do what makes you happy.

While professional happiness is essential, the way you get there might not always be through your heart.

Check out all the videos below before moving on to the Pro-Action plan task for this section.

Watch last year’s video – if you need to here.

Pro-Action Plan Step Week Two (3 of 5):

What is Valuable to You?

Take some time to think about the things that are most valuable to you. Also, consider how you have been thinking about the career you might want to pursue.

Then on the “Career Journey” Page in your Pro-Action plan use the space provided to share your ideas.

Remember: you can choose any write your answers, or record an audio or video file to express your ideas.

Note: You will need to discuss your answers in our circles during our sessions together.

The Career Zone

This summer, you are going to dive into the Career Zone Portfolio. Your goal will be to take all assessments before deciding which sector you’ll join this year.

Please refer back to your NYCID_Proaction_Plan_TWO to access your Career Zone Details. If you do not have access, please re-watch the video below to create a new account or watch the main video to learn how to access your account from last year using the forgot password features for your previous user name.

Watch last year’s video – if you need to here.

Once you are back into Career Zone, we’re going to start matching this up for you. Remember that the best way to ensure you are on the right path is to keep testing your decisions and ideas. So in this step, your goal is to compare the information you are getting from Career Zone to what you know about yourself.

Note –  use the Ladder of Inference to consider the choice you are going to make!

Pro-Action Plan Step Week Two (4 of 5):

Am I choosing the right path?

Complete the following two surveys on Career Zone:

Note: If you recall last year you completed the O’Net Assessment.

For this step feel free to retake the O’Net Assessment if you wish.

Spend some time thinking about what you entered in last week’s Pro-Action Plan for the careers you have been considering for your life. Then compare those to your O ‘Net Survey results.

Then on the “Career Journey” Page in your Pro-Action plan use the space provided to make you decision.

Note: You will need to discuss your answers in our circles during our sessions together.

Tool ~ Ladder of Inference

As human beings we spend a lot of time observing and taking in information from the world. Just about everything you do requires that you respond to some type of situation. Some times the actions we take are spot on – we get it right! And other times, wow – we can really mess up and not even know why.

Pro-Action Plan Step Week Two (5 of 5)

Using the Ladder of Inference consider an emotionally charged situation where you found yourself having taken an action using the wrong observable information.

Walk down the ladder to “retrace” your steps.

Answer in your workbook.

Then on the “My Tools” Page in your Pro-Action plan use the space provided to share your ideas.

Remember: you can choose any write your answers, or record an audio or video file to express your ideas.

Note: You will need to discuss your answers in our circles during our sessions together.

Circle Up – How are MWe?

Round One: Where in the coolest place you’ve ever been?

Round Two: Describe a time in your life when you acted off of the wrong information. How did you feel when you realized you were wrong?

Be prepared to share your answer to the from above in the circle.

Harvest

Upon returning to the main circle – we will harvest (share) some of what was moving in the smaller conversations.

The Question in the main circle is always: What is moving in me?
